My Favorite Software Downloads
Note: Some of these downloads are for trial versions only (though
none of the software is particularly expensive). As a professional
software developer, I strongly encourage you to download the trial,
check it out, and then purchase the software if you find it useful.
Software of general interest:
- Mozilla, maker of the
Firefox web browser, Thunderbird email client, and BugZilla bug
tracking system, all of which I would highly recommend.
- The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation
Program), an excellent image editor, for tasks such as creating images
from scratch and photo retouching
- Mighty
FAX,
fax sending and receiving software (Note: For fax receiving, I
now use a free Internet-based fax service at
K7.net. If you sign up there, be
sure to set it up for Internet access, whether or not you also
set it up to email your faxes to you, because sometimes the
emails don't go through and you want a backup!)
- WinZip, for creating and
opening archive files of many different types
- Adobe
Acrobat Reader, for reading PDF files
Software of more interest to developers and IT experts:
- Cygwin, a Linux-like environment,
complete with X-Windows, that runs under Windows
- Emacs,
a full-featured programmer's text editor
- FileZilla,
an FTP client
- PuTTY,
a telnet/SSH client for Windows
- NSIS, the Nullsoft
Scriptable Install System, which you can use to make installation
programs for your Windows-based software
