Is Peace Possible?

Terrorism was in the news today (the U.K. apparently broke up a plot to blow up commercial trans-Atlantic flights)... it got me thinking about the question of whether it is possible to achieve peace in the Middle East, and the world in general. Here are a few thoughts.

First off, what would it mean to say that we had achieved "World Peace"? There are three components to my vision of World Peace. First, dispute resolution: regional and international disputes would always be solved without violence and without the threat of violence. Second, personal freedom: everyone in the world would have the right to believe, speak, and live the way they wanted to (as long as that manner of living respected others' rights to believe, speak, and live in their own way), without oppression or fear of reprisal. Third, social justice: everyone would have access to the means to achieve at least a basic level of food, housing, health, education, employment, and environmental protection. I do not believe that anything short of all three of these conditions would truly mean World Peace.

I want to believe that it is possible to achieve this vision of World Peace, but I have my doubts. To have World Peace, it would require everyone in the world, fundamentally, to respect every other human being in the world. But today many religions (especially the fundamentalist branches of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, which appear to be growing) are teaching intolerance rather than respect -- and in some cases, advocating violence against others who do not share their beliefs. If a group does not respect the right of another group to exist, obviously the two groups will never be at peace; if people do not respect the rights of other people to live and believe differently, there will always be the threat of oppression in the future. So, until these religions start teaching respect instead of intolerance, or until they fade away because people realize the inhumanity of what they are teaching, we will never achieve true World Peace.

Another obstacle to achieving World Peace, frankly, is U.S. foreign policy. Again, it is a problem of respect: the U.S. does not act as though it respects any other nation's right to self-determination. If a country is being told what to do by another country, under an implied or more concrete threat of violence, then the two countries are not at peace. So, until the U.S. shifts its policy away from promoting U.S. business' domination of the world economy under threat of violence, we will never achieve true World Peace.

Should I continue to hold onto my hope for World Peace?

Jennifer I just ran across your blog from Aug 2006. I hold out the same hope you do and I hope you haven't given up though we are 16 months down the road and it doesn't look any better. Never the less I hold onto my hope. Religion was supposed to take care of this problem but alas it seems to have failed also. Will another 1000 years of evolution do the job? I have a small discussion group by invitation only of like minded people though we welcome all who are sincere in the their hope for a better world. I can be reached at jyrasco@yahoo.com and we would welcome your particpation if you are interested. So far most of the more conservative minded people who have participated continued to hold to the use of force and violence to fix the problem. I think that is the problem. Join us if you like. Yes, you should hope for world peace. the world is still in a kindergarten stage of development...one day we will be better. many school bullies turn out to be softies when they grow up lol. keep spreading love...even to those that hate us and simply let the love become greater than the love of power. if you have experienced or witnessed love and peace between a bully and its victim....you can comfortably believe that world peace is possible. :o)

Yes,,please do hold onto your belief that peace is possible! But more than that,, demand peace. So many want to believe the world is so very old,, but we are just a baby. We still do not have an effective international police force,, and we are struggling with a world criminal court. Fate and evolution have brought us this far,, and now education and law will bring us the rest of the way. You have relative peace and order in your local community, most probably, because you have a fairly intelligent police staff, and a reasonable local court. We cannot ever expect to have peace in this world without enforceable international law. Again,, we are a young world. We are still willing to kill over what is in the "tomato patch." Soon,, we will be killing over rights to clean water. I believe the world has a small window to become a world of laws. If we do not encourage these radical dreamers,, we are probably destined to recklessly poison our planet,, killing our populations,, leaving massive amounts of weapons and arms for the tougher insects to crawl over in centuries ahead. Yes,,, peace is very possible,, but peace must be enforced. Man proves everyday,, that he needs to be very carefully monitored. Peace equals effective and consistent international law enforcement. Sounds sort of odd for an old hippy to say this,, but this is the case.
